Walk on snow Life Traverse City Record

Walk on snow Life Traverse City Record

Upcoming events are designed for everyone from beginners to pros. And all it takes to get out in the woods is a http://www.official49ersnflproshop.com/Nike-Navorro-Bowman-Jersey.html pair of shoes.

The National Park Service is so eager to have snowshoers wander the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, they'll provide the shoes for free during scheduled weekend hikes.

The park has about 40 pairs of adult snowshoes and 15 to 20 pairs of snowshoes for young people, said Ranger Steve Johnson Authentic Jersey Tom Huntington, and sometimes they run out.

Snowshoe hikes Anquan Boldin Womens Jersey are scheduled every Saturday and Sunday through February. "Then we'll see how much snow we have in March," Huntington said.

Rangers choose a path in the morning, depending on the weather, Huntington said. "If it's incredibly windy, we won't be up on the dunes, we'll stay in the woods," he said. The hikes are "very informative," he www.official49ersnflproshop.com/Nike-Colin-Kaepernick-Jersey.html said, with rangers who are well versed in animal tracks and habitats plus plants and geology.

Reservations are encouraged (see sidebar, Page 2B). Hikes range from a half mile to a mile and a half and aren't too strenuous, Huntington said. "We've had everyone from kids to 80 year olds," he said.

Beginning snowshoers should plan to go about two thirds as far as they can hike Anquan Boldin Authentic Jersey on foot, said Daniel Siderman, store manager at the Running Fit on Front Street in downtown Traverse City. Running Fit is an organizer of this weekend's Bigfoot Snowshoe Race, open to everyone from beginners to pros.

"If you can normally hike for three miles, you should try to snowshoe for two miles," Siderman said.

Siderman said snowshoeing is a great workout for your lower body legs, hips and butt. Snowshoeing burns about 400 to 500 calories an hour, according to Self magazine. If you try to break your own trail, Siderman said, "it's a really tough workout." He recommends using a snowmobile trail or hiking trail, but stay off the groomed cross country ski trails. It messes up the skiers when they hit a snowshoe divot, Siderman said.

Poles aren't necessary, Siderman said, although if you want to use them or have balance issues, they're fine.

Snowshoe prices start at $25 for children's shoes, which are often less durable and not made to last long, mainly because kids outgrow them. Kids snowshoes usually have a rounded back, Siderman said, which offers more "flotation" on the snow.

Adult snowshoes can cost as much as $300 for high end gear, but you can find a decent pair for much less than that. The length is based on a person's weight 25 inches in standard for people weighing up to 175 pounds.

Siderman recommends dressing "a little lighter" than you would for a walking winter hike. Meet at Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire. Bring your own snowshoes or borrow a pair from the park. Call 326 5134, ext. 328, Steve Johnson Kids Jersey for details and to make reservations. No experience necessary, but there are a handful of serious racers hoping to qualify for March's National Championship Snowshoe race. from the main parking lot by the Village at the Homestead Resort. The trip is 4 5 miles, about 2 to 3 hours. The morning trip will be combined with lunch in Glen Arbor, then an afternoon snowshe trip at Pyramid Point or possibly cross country skiing at Alligator Hill, depending on the snow. Call 334 6300 or (630) 729 4662. Jan. 30, 5K and 10K snowshoe races, $15 advance registration, $20 on race day, free fun walk, plus afternoon of Family Fun Day activities, snow sculpture competition, winter craft projects, snowshoe obstacle course and trips down the zip line, free with canned good donation, chili lunch available; YMCA Camp Hayo Went Ha, 919 N.
